Abstract

The behavior of planktonic larvae in the Tama River estuary and Tokyo Bay was examined by a larval dispersal model developed in this study for the estuarine bivalve Corbicula japonica and the estuarine crab Chiromantes dehaani larvae. In the model for C. japonica larvae, the vertical movement due to the preferred salinity and the water temperature and/or salinity dependent mortality rates and others were taken into account. For C. dehaani larvae, the effects of the diurnal vertical movement under the influence of hypoxic bottom water and the water temperature dependent mortality rate and others were modeled. The numerical simulation output was confirmed to reasonably well reproduce the spatial distribution patterns of the relative larval population density and the fractional age ratios of larvae found in the field survey.
