<p>This paper examines the environmental sociological analysis of natural disasters. It also demonstrates how this examination relates to an integrated approach to the study of natural disasters: a cause and effect model of development-environment-disaster. To attain these aims, the paper attempts to answer the following questions: “How might it be possible to analyze natural disasters from an environmental sociological viewpoint?” “What are some examples of the application of the cause and effect model of development-environment-disaster from an environmental sociological perspective?” and “How can environmental sociology contribute to the research of natural disasters?”</p><p>With regard to analyzing natural disasters from an environmental sociological viewpoint, a review of the existing research published in the Journal of Environmental Sociology of Japan is presented and the current research situation and recent trends are clarified. The paper, then, focuses on the interconnections between development, environment, and disasters.</p><p>Concerning the application of the cause and effect model of development-environment-disaster, the paper tries to elaborate on the interconnections of the model, not only for one country’s development-environment-disaster cycle, but also for relationships between two or more countries. These are explained through the case studies of the Typhoon Isewan Disaster of September 26th, 1959 and the Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster of December 26th, 2004.</p><p>With reference to the contribution to natural disasters research from an environmental sociological viewpoint, the paper highlights the benefits of environmental sociology in analyzing natural disasters by combining previous environmental sociological research viewpoints and the development-environment-disaster cycle model. The paper also clarifies how any development plan for a sustainable future must take into account considerations of the environment and thus attempt to mitigate damage from disasters. Moreover, it is demonstrated how different countries are related to each other by utilizing the model and further necessary environmental sociological research is indicated.</p>
