大腸癌の中には親から子へと受け継がれる遺伝性疾患がある．このうちもっとも頻度の高いリンチ症候群では原因遺伝子が明らかになってきているものの，すべてに遺伝子変異が見つかる訳ではない．その他の補助的な診断法を用いて境界領域をできるだけ狭め，より迅速に簡便に疾患を絞り込む工夫が臨床的には非常に大切である．同時に，異なった症候群が隠れている可能性を常に念頭において診断が進められなくてはならない．
