Abstract

Contemporary environmental issues have a structure that leads to an increase in the number of actors involved, which, in turn, causes a change in governance structure. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of environmental sociologists participating in projects designed to solve environmental problems. The AKAYA project is an example of this phenomenon. I am in charge of the general management of the project operation from the standpoint of being both an environmental sociologist and a program officer of one of the nature conservation groups. The project is proceeding with the collaboration of various entities, such as the local people, local government, forest administration, nature conservation groups, scientists, and supporters.

In this paper, I discuss the role of environmental sociology in project management aimed at solving environmental issues. For project management, environmental sociology is a useful technique that can aid in setting pluralistic values and thereby reach a consensus. It can also aid in understanding the aims and situation of the members and their action through its listening research method. Furthermore, environmental sociology can assist in surveying structural problems based on understanding social relationships. In cases of environmental governance, I point out that environmental sociology is able to contribute to solving environmental issues, actively playing the role of the organizing principle.
