Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the new factor driving rapid internationalization by SMEs using the mixed method approach for cases of Japanese SMEs. Previous studies have shown that SMEs with poor internal resources rapidly internationalized after long-term domestic experiences through critical events such as M&As or influential international entrepreneurship. However, recently, some Japanese SMEs with long-term domestic experience have rapidly internationalized through neither critical events nor influential international entrepreneurship, but by utilizing external experts as external resources. This study explores the role of these external experts in Japanese SMEs' rapid internationalization, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

First, this study introduces the case of Advertising Agency Nagata Co., Ltd., and finds the utilization of external experts as a new success factor behind such rapid internationalization. Next, it qualitatively analyzes the role that external experts play in the rapid internationalization. As a result, four factors, namely “information provision in line with context,” “introduction of network,” “mental support,” and “learning support,” are extracted. Then, these are quantitatively verified using the questionnaire survey result data of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Furthermore, the external experts' influence on “Model of Forces Influencing Internationalization Speed” (Oviatt & McDougall, 2005) is discussed.
