Description

At our institution, we identified pincer nails in 32 out of 172 patients undergoing dialysis. In addition, 65.6% of these patients had diabetes or were over the age of 70. Diabetes and old age are associated with a high risk of foot ulcers. In these high-risk patients, it is important to prevent wounds to the toes caused by pincer nails. In the present study, we selected specific tools that can be used by nurses to straighten pincer nails. These tools, Makidume Robo and Makidume Block, were used as an early intervention to prevent wounds to the toes caused by pincer nails. On the first day of the treatment, Makidume Robo effectively resolved penetration of the nails into the skin for most patients. As many of the pincer nails had deformed from the root, these nails often deformed again within 1 week of straightening. However, repeated treatments were effective in gradually straightening the curvature of the nail plate to resolve penetration of the nails into the skin. Our findings suggest that straightening of pincer nails during dialysis is practical and effective.
