Ethics education for advanced nursing students: tasks based on how 5-year combined high school and technical school specializing in nursing-students think about ethics

Abstract

<p> This study aimed to clarify how nursing students enrolled at a 5-year combined high school and technical school specializing in nursing courses think about nursing ethics. This information will provide insights on how to design future courses in ethics education. Students completed a questionnaire-based survey assessing what they think about specific ethical issues. The survey involved six issues:(1)refusal of blood transfusion for religious reasons,(2)elective abortion following a prenatal diagnosis, and(3)harvesting of organs from brain-dead patients. While studentsʼ values appeared grounded in ethical principles, many were incapable of multilateral thinking and might have expressed emotional rather than ethical judgments. Semi-structured interviews with 10 students identified three core categories within which ethical issues were classified: foundations of ethical issue recognition, method of recognition, and emotions. By considering that the students examined and interpreted ethical issues from their nursing values, comparison with learned content, patientsʼ feedback, and imagining the patientsʼ viewpoint, itʼs suggested that the challenges in nursing ethics education relate to how to best impart knowledge, deepen nursing values, and nurture more sensitive nursing students.</p>
