Abstract

<p> We measured nitrate concentrations in the Miyakonojo Basin groundwater. The measurements were started in November 1995 and were conducted annually thereafter, mainly in February and August. It is necessary to ascertain the nitrate concentrations in the locations where they are not measured. Therefore, for this study, we developed a method to interpolate the nitrate concentrations at locations without reported measurements. Our proposed method can calculate the interpolated nitrate concentrations using the measured nitrate concentrations based on three factors: spatial distance from the unmeasured location to the measured location, time intervals from the unmeasured period to the measured period, and correlation coefficients between the nitrate concentrations in measured and unmeasured periods. To verify the effectiveness of our method, experiments were conducted using nitrate concentrations in February and August during 2007-2016. There were 808 measurement locations. Measurements were taken at 500-600 locations in February and August, respectively. Results show that our method can interpolate the nitrate concentrations with a difference of about 1.0 mg/L on average.</p>
