Abstract

<p>In the preface to the translation of Robinson Crusoe Ōgai Mori deals with the problem of literary censorship. There in the form of dialogue Robinson Crusoe is described as a work that gives a warning against the nation's extreme restriction of the freedom of thought, speech, and expression. So it is not coincidence that he became a member of the committee on art and literature of the Education Ministry in 1911 when he wrote the preface. To put his liberal idea into practice Ōgai tried to find a way to alleviate state control on literature from the inside of the government.</p>
