Roles and Functions of School Counselors in Their Consultation for Teachers Expected by High School Teachers

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine 1) how high school teachers evaluate school counselors' activities and recognize their own changes by making use of school counselors, 2) what kinds of roles and functions of school counselors in their consultation for teachers are expected, and 3) how are different roles and functions of school counselors on their consultation between the preventive supporting problems and the risk managing problems. As a result of a questionnaire to 112 high school teachers, it was found that they felt secure with the specialty of school counselors and evaluated their supports for teachers. On the other hand, they were not satisfied with school counselor's activities and recognized their mental conflicts. In addition, it showed that on the preventive supporting problems, high school teachers expected (1) a coordinator for the teacher's autonomous support, (2) an advisor for teacher's appropriate support, (3) a monitor for introspecting about their own activities, and (4) a connector for adjusting relationships between teachers and parents. Meanwhile on the risk managing problems, (1) a coordinator for the team support and (2) a director for the emergency support.
