Abstract

There have been various learning strategies based on findings in cognitive psychology such as implicit memory effect and level-of-processing model. Previous studies, however, have not effectively composed these strategies for motivating learning. In this study, we propose a learning support method and system on the basis of the implicit memory effect and level-of-processing model. We then report the results of two examinations: theoretical experiment and preliminary evaluation using a prototype system, conducted to examine the learning effects of applying the proposed method and system to the facilitation of understanding flood hazard map. The theoretical experiment showed that the effect of memory retention of map legends knowledge and their related knowledge when perception-level information was presented before semantic information. In addition, preliminary examination indicated that the learning effect for understanding map legends in the learning support system. These results suggest that the proposal method and system can advance understanding of flood hazard map.
