Abstract

<p>Rain-wind induced vibration occurred for stay cables of a cable-stayed bridge with a high damping rubber damper. We focused on this incident and compared the damping assumed at designing the high damping rubber damper and that obtained by a field vibration test of the cable in order to investigate the cause of the vibration. The calculation of the damping of the high damping rubber damper is performed by a simple estimation formula which is an approximate expression. The damping obtained by the field vibration test was smaller than the simple estimation formula, and it was the same for the damping obtained by a complex eigenvalue analysis. Therefore, we considered the influence of the shear elastic spring constant of the high damping rubber damper and cable tension on damping. As a result, we found that the reduction of the damping becomes remarkable when the shear spring constant becomes small and that the shear spring constant becomes smaller due to the influence of the rigidity of the mounting part of the high damping rubber damper. </p>
