In principle, all fruits and vegetables are subject to seasonal availability, and the prices of individual fruit and vegetable items fluctuate depending on their current availability in the market. However, these seasonal price fluctuations are changing in Japan and not following conventional seasonal price cycles. This paper analyzes the major factors of the recent trends of seasonal price fluctuations for fresh fruit and vegetables from an economic perspective. Using econometric analysis, the following three factors were identified as the dominant contributors to the new trend of seasonal price fluctuations for fresh fruit and vegetables:(1)Establishment of year-round shipping enabled by the advancement of long-term storage techniques for greengrocers, which in turn maximizes profits and stabilizes earnings for the producers;(2)Coordination of planned shipment times to avoid excessive competition with other producers and supported by improved agricultural production and distribution systems;(3)The development and popularization of "big data" and ICT(Information and Communications Technology)systems has revolutionized the accuracy of supply and demand forecasts, thus minimizing the influence of seasonal variations and optimizing product shipments to the market.
