Abstract

Scientific and academic misconduct (i.e., fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism) is a serious problem, since faculties in academia are ranked by academic and research performance, and promotion in academic careers is based on scholarly productivity. In many misconduct cases, unethical behavior results from academics succumbing to one or more of the following urges; 1) to satisfy their intellectual curiosity, 2) to cause mischief or gain attention, 3) to generate data supporting their theories, or 4) to get funds for research projects from commercial corporations. In addition, in most misconduct cases there has been insufficient training and guidance, and primary investigators in modern laboratories often fail to pay enough attention to their staff’s conduct. The referee system, peer review and bothersome regulations are not effective in completely eliminating misconduct, which inflicts immeasurable damage on social and economic development. In education, it is important to present students with scientific works based on research adhering to strict ethical guidelines.
