Foreign language instruction often takes place in classrooms where interaction with the teacher and the recorded materials he/she brings into class are the sole source of native speaker cultural and language input. Online intercultural exchanges through email, and more recently, videomail(Vmail)provide opportunities for students to interact with native speakers and other language learners across borders and cultures. This paper describes four separate online intercultural exchanges done between April 2008 and July 2009. In these exchanges university students in Japan were paired with students in Hungary, USA, Taiwan and Turkey. In each exchange students communicated using videomail(Vmail). Two classes used a videomail dedicated website: Tokbox(www.tokbox.com), and two classes used a social networking website: Facebook(www.facebook.com), which contains a videomail feature. This paper describes the exchanges in turn, and discusses the results of each exchange from both the students and teachers perspective. Suggestions are given for how to optimize student benefits when doing a videomail exchange, and a brief comparison the two interfaces, Tokbox and Facebook, is provided.
