Abstract
Ship of opportunity (SOOP) or voluntary observing ship (VOS) has been recognized as effective platforms to monitor the marine environmental changes in the coastal seas because of its capability to cover the time and space scales relevant for spectra of important phenomena such as algal blooms, applicability of diverse sensing methods and low cost/benefit ratio. This report shows the monitoring program using ferries by National Institute for Environmental Studies (1991-ongoing), Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (1998-ongoing) and the other programs being performed or planned in the European countries. The products obtained specifically by use of the ferries are described together with the future prospects.
