Abstract

The importance of iron as a limiting factor for phytoplankton growth is now well known. However, there have been debates for more than20years among oceanographers regarding the open question ‘what controls phytoplankton production in nutrient rich areas of open ocean ?’ Iron is required for many metabolic functions of phytoplankton in both components and enzymes. We examined the effects of iron on metabolism, especially on nitrogen in phytoplankton. As temperature is also an important factor regulating cellular metabolisms, the combined effects of iron and temperature were evaluated in the laboratory and at sea.
