Description

With interdisciplinary intersection among philosophy, ethics, and sociology advancing, sociologists have recently inquired how the normative theory can be applied to their field. Max Weber’s notion of “ideal type” is a tool that has been used frequently in social analysis to frame and distinguish sociological concepts from value judgments. When applied to various contexts, however, the ideal type has appeared to address value judgment as an ideal. When sociologists need to establish value judgments in interdisciplinary contexts, what kinds of methods are available to facilitate decision-making other than ideal type?<br> The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issues of facts and values, by proposing the concept of “normative type,”――in relation to ideal type――, which focuses on a methodology for value judgment. Normative type is an analytical tool used for assessments and normative arguments on prospective issues. The normative type also functions as the values of principles and the criteria for judgments such as rules, consisting of components similar to those found in ideal type. This paper further explains empirical bioethics as an emerging field in interdisciplinary studies in an effort to show the specific characteristics of normative types. Finally, this article concludes by discussing the necessity to include normative theory and a methodology for value judgment in the field of sociology.
