Description
To develop a simple method to determine the optimal timing for the application of gibberellin (GA3) to fruit clusters of ‘Delaware’ grape in the field from the number of leaves using the shoot in the different positions (numbered from the tip of the bearing mother shoot). Using ‘Delaware’ grape leafing data from 1987 to 2018, we analyzed the relationship between the shoot position on the bearing mother shoot and the average number of leaves per shoot on the day when the average number of leaves per shoot in all shoots reached 9.5, which is used as an indicator for the timing of GA3 application in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. The average number of leaves on the day based on the average number of total shoot leaves was the largest on the first shoot as counted from the tip of the bearing mother shoot and decreased gradually toward its base. In view of practical considerations, we analyzed the relationship between the numbers of samples of the first shoot and second shoot( second shoot from the tip of the bearing mother shoot) and the error of estimation of the number of leaves. The results suggested that under the weather conditions in Osaka Prefecture, the optimal timing for GA3 application could be determined from sampling 8 first shoots as the day on which the average number of leaves exceeded 10.5, or from 8 second shoots as the day on which it exceeded 10.0.
