Description

The magnetostrictive materials are widely used in various fields such as sensors, actuators, energy harvesting devices and so on [1]. Among several magnetostrictive materials, Terfenol-D is widely used for various applications due to its largest magnetostriction at room-temperature while Terfenol-D is expensive. Therefore, we have focused on Fe-Co alloys [2, 3], which are lower cost, have better workability, and higher strength compared with Terfenol-D. It is highly expected that Fe-Co fibers/epoxy composites can be put into practical use as lightweight magnetostrictive materials with an excellent flexibility and a toughness.

In this study, we fabricated discontinuous Fe-Co fibers/epoxy composite sheets and investigated its magnetic properties. Fig.1 shows the fabrication process of discontinuous Fe-Co fibers/epoxy composite sheets. The fabricated Fe-Co fibers/epoxy composite sheets of length 70 mm, width 25 mm and thickness 0.45 mm were cut to approximately 6 60.45 mm3 and their magnetic induction vs magnetic field and strain vs magnetic field curves were evaluated. It was revealed that the discontinuous Fe-Co fibers homogeneously dispersed epoxy matrix composite sheets has magnetostrictive properties.
