Description

Recently, emergency room (ER) has been attracting interest as a promising workplace for paramedics. However, Japanese legal restrictions make it difficult for them to perform at their best in ER. This study evaluated their contribution to ER by a questionnaire. Twenty ER doctors and nineteen ER nurses were enrolled in this study. The results showed that the professional communication between paramedics and emergency medical service (EMS) contributed to decreasing workloads of ER staffs. Moreover, this study demonstrated that their professional support could improve the quality of medical care in ER. We conclude that the existence of paramedics in ER could be useful even under legal restrictions.
