Abstract

Building energy simulation is an effective tool for establishing building codes and other policy determinations. However, simulations are limited to very simple assumptions of temperatures and schedules because there have been few measurements of actual HVAC usage. In this paper, real-world HVAC usage and temperature profiles were obtained from about 10,000 homes equipped with connected thermostats. The data clearly show the impact of climate, temperature settings, and number of occupants on HVAC usage. A method was developed to generate typical operating schedules and temperatures based on actual, observed conditions. These data could serve as a more realistic input for simulation.
