Description

A case of prolonged emergence of Samia cynthia pryeri (Butler, 1878) was reported. The overwintering generation of this species was collected in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture, Central Honshu, as mid-instar larvae on September 10th, 2016. The larvae were estimated to be a brood, because they were found in a single host tree as a group, being the same larval instar. All of the 16 larvae pupated in a period from 20th to 24th in September. They were transferred in a large rearing cage (60× 56×94 cm) indoors for emergence in the next summer. The room was maintained in semi-natural air and light condition without any air conditioning equipment. Nine (1♀8♂) overwintering pupae emerged in a period from 7th to 23rd of June, and four (2♀2♂) in a period from 2nd to 19th of August in 2017. The adult moths usually fly twice a year in Shiga Prefecture, though this species is univoltine in Kanto region and northern area in Japan. The prolonged emergence observed in this time, with almost a bimodal pattern, suggests that this species could take a flexible strategy under a variable environment in the Central Honshu.
