Abstract

Hofu City Clean Center was built as Japan’s first municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration and biogas generation complex. At this plant, some of the MSW sorted in the mechanical sorting system is made up of materials suitable to biogas generation for conversion into biogas via a methane fermentation process.
The biogas is used to superheat main boiler steam for high-efficiency power generation. The fermentation residue is dehydrated and returned to the waste pit for incineration with the MSW. Waste water that is emitted in the dehydration process is discharged into the sewer system after treatment.
This plant began operations in April 2014. Green Park Hofu, which was founded as a special purpose company by Kawasaki, is responsible for its operation up to the year 2034.
