Abstract

Some reports indicate that acupuncturists contribute to palliative care of cancer patients. However, it is unclear to which extent acupuncturists are able to establish effective working relationships with other medical professionals, such as doctors and nurses, in hospital palliative-care settings. Therefore, interviews with six acupuncturists and five other medical professionals were conducted to clarify the relationship between acupuncturists and other medical professionals in hospital palliative-care settings. The outcome of this study confirmed the existence of barriers hindering the establishment of working relationships between acupuncturists and other medical professionals in palliative-care settings. However, acupuncturists followed various tactical approaches to bridge those barriers, whereas doctors and nurses also used specific approaches to connect with each other.
