Abstract
Media provides us with most of the information we receive, and influences our understanding of the world. To critically understand media and its reconstruction of the reality, media literacy education has become increasingly important. In this context, media literacy education has developed significantly in the past decades. However, an educational program which stresses creative practice and involves an overall understanding of media literacy is still rare. We have developed a web-based media literacy education program with an online video editing simulator (VES) based on a “frame/montage” schema, to provide creative practice and teach how media messages are constructed. The present study evaluates this program through pre- and post-tests, exercises, and a survey questionnaire. The comparison between the pre-test and the post-test suggests that this program significantly improved participants'media literacy. Furthermore, analysis on improvements of each element in the program structure, their correlations with total improvement, and elements analysis of exercises indicate that the frame/montage schema was effective in a certain measure. Correlations of practice with exercises and the pre- and post-test, and evaluation results of the survey questionnaire indicate that the VES is effective. However, the results also indicate that teaching materials and the VES need some improvement for better outcomes.
