Abstract

In this paper, we describe a newly developed utterance evaluation e-learning system using phonetic segment labels. In this system, time spectral patterns in the word speech of Japanese language learners are transferred to phonetic segment labels every 8 ms frame shift. We also developed an algorithm that estimates consonant domain, border domain, and vowel domain from the phonetic segment label sequence. An evaluation of fricative geminate consonants could be performed by a threshold about the sum of consonant domain length and border domain length. Similarly, evaluations of affricate and plosive geminate consonants could be performed by a threshold about border domain length. The evaluation of long vowels could be performed by a threshold about vowel domain length. Evaluation experiments were performed using a speech database uttered by foreign and Japanese students. The average error rate for the existence of geminate consonants regarding the words /ga∫oo/ and /gaQ∫oo/ was 2.1 %, and the average error rate for the existence of long vowels was 5.0%. The average error rate for the existence of geminate consonants regarding the words /icuu/ and /iQcuu/ was 2.2%, and the average error rate for the existence of long vowels was 1.5%.The average error rate for the existence of geminate consonants regarding the words /supai/ and /suQpai/ was 1.4%. The average error rate for the existence of geminate consonants regarding the words /seki/ and /seQki/ was 0%. Meanwhile, online experiments using the speech evaluation e learning system were carried out on eight words uttered by three male and three female foreign students. Improvement was observed for all 9 inappropriate utterances.
