Description

Understanding the condition of the body by percussion, auscultation, and so on is called physical assessment. Through revision of the curriculum for basic nursing education, physical assessment has become an essential subject for nursing students. Because of the limited number of teachers and study time, however, an adequate educational setup has yet to be established. In this research, an e-learning system for study of the percussion technique of physical assessment by nursing students, integrating comparative evaluation and autonomous evaluation, was developed. Comparative evaluation uses the autocorrelation function as a feature parameter and evaluates the feature parameter between a model percussion and the student's percussion by correlation coefficient. Autonomous evaluation is performed by evaluating the number of peaks of autocorrelation function and the distribution of short intervals between double percussions and slightly longer intervals between sets of double percussions repeated four or five times. In this proposed system, from 50% to 100% of data tapped according to appropriate procedures by teachers was evaluated as good percussion. On the other hand, data that had problems in terms of how to apply finger to subject and how to twist and release the snap was not evaluated as good percussion.
