Abstract

n this study, laser nitriding was performed for SUS316 used as sliding parts of machine or titanium alloys used as biomaterials like artificial hip joint. This was done to investigate the influence on the laser treated surface of titanium alloys or stainless steels under some laser nitriding conditions such as defocus and scanning speed. Nitriding is generally used in order to improve the wear resistance. Laser nitriding can be performed locally and more rapidly as compared to gas nitriding or plasma nitriding. The treated surface was characterized using X-ray diffraction to identify the presence of compounds on the treated surface. In addition, the cross section of the treated surface was characterized using an optical microscope.
