Abstract

We have applied a deep-sub-wavelength artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) surface to a unidirectional small antenna at 920 MHz band. By constructing the AMC as a two-dimensional lumped element LC network, miniaturization of 1/6 to 1/13 of wavelength has been achieved. It is shown that such an AMC of only a fraction of area works as a significantly strong reflector of electromagnetic wave. A basic prototype antenna with a side 1/6 and a height 1/25 of wavelength, as well as an ultra-compact antenna of half the size of the basic one, have significantly large front-to-back radiation ratio and good unidirectionality, indicating the effectiveness of the AMC.
