Abstract

In Sagoromo-monogatari Sagoromo and Ippon-no-Miya at first misunderstand each other but finally get united in marriage. This plot line is obviously based on the “Yūgiri” Chapter of Genji-monogatari. But the alleged author Rokujōsaiin-no-Senji didn't merely borrow it from the earlier work. Instead of letters, she used rumor as an important literary device which facilitates a development of the story. This subtle inflection gives a sort of originality to the story which differentiates itself from the original while copying it.
