Abstract

Mobile robots are getting more common in our daily life. Such robots may have multiple power sources and multiple power consuming units. It is required to implement a simple and flexible power delivery system for those robots. We have designed a four-wheel rover with power packet technology to demonstrate simple and flexible power delivery. The rover has four-wheels driven by independent motors and moves according to electric power supplied to each motor. A power packet technology is used to control power delivery to each motor. In order to able the rover operates alone, new high-speed switching power-supply unit is designed. The power supply unit uses flyback converter circuit, with switching frequency of 2.1 MHz, to boost output of lithium ion battery (LIB) to 12 V suitable for power packet generation. A power-packet transmitter and receiver were developed using single-board microcontroller and MOSFET switches. Finally, we demonstrated that the power packet technology is adopted for rover to enable flexible power delivery system.
