Sociocultural analysis of conscious parenting—International comparative study on Shanghai/Kitakyushu (1)—

A questionnaire survey has been conducted for parents with infants in Shanghai and Kitakyushu during the period from September to December 2019.The purpose of this research is to examine the characteristics of the environment and culture through a comparison between Japan and China from the results of (1) Consciousness parenting and attitude, (2) Environment related to child-rearing (family/relative relationship and physical environment).As a result of this international comparison survey, (1) The result of the awareness and attitude of child-rearing has shown that fathers rather than the mothers felt that “child-rearing is enjoyable. In particular, 60.3% of Japanese fathers have felt that “child-raising is very enjoyable”. In addition, it has been revealed that the mothers have shown a similar tendency in Japan and China, about 10 points higher than the fathers feel negative about raising children.As a result of (2) Environment related to child-rearing (family/relative relationship and physical environment), approximately 80% of the respondents in China have indicated that their grandparents were involved in child-rearing, which is extremely high compared to 50% in Japan. For continuous research and forthcoming challenges, the paper will discuss the actual situation of the involvement and the influence on conscious parenting.
