Abstract

Changes in the typhoon tracks approaching the Kanto area were investigated for the 1951-2020 period. The number of typhoons approaching the Kanto area has increased after 2000. We defined typhoon moving direction for each typhoon using the best track data from the Japan Meteorological Agency. The typhoon moving direction has changed from the west and southwest direction before 2000 to SSW-SSE direction after 2000. The years that the North Pacific subtropical high shifts northeastward was observed after 2000. We concluded that the circulation changes after 2000 affected the typhoon numbers and tracks approaching the Kanto area.
