Abstract
In this article, we emphasize that: (i) methylglyoxal (MGO) is mainly formed as a byproduct of glycolysis and, under physiological circumstances, detoxified by the glyoxalases (GLXase) and glutathione (GSH) systems; (ii) the imbalance between the formation of MGO and its detoxification is linked to the rapid reaction with guanidyl residue, forming MG-H1/CEA; (iii) the MGO modification/ glycation is subsequently leading to the vascular complications in diabetes.
