Abstract

In this study, a questionnaire survey involving 5th and 6th grade students (n=160) who attend elementary schools in Tokyo was conducted to investigate the frequency of shared family meals and spontaneous communication during mealtimes. The association of “the frequency of shared family meals and spontaneous communication during mealtimes” with decision-making, goal-setting skills, and QOL was examined. As a result, “the frequency of shared family meals and spontaneous communication during mealtimes” was associated with decision-making and goal-setting skills. Furthermore, “the frequency of shared family meals and spontaneous communication during mealtimes” was associated with a favorable QOL for the children, which reflects an individual’s overall sense of wellbeing. Further detailed examinations should be conducted corresponding to changes in shared family meals in order to obtain data useful for the promotion of food education.
