Abstract

When a large amount of information on a future spouse is obtained before marriage, it can be assumed that marital satisfaction is high, because quality of match with the spouse should be good. Although previous studies have focused on cohabitation as a courtship experience that improves quality of match, it is empirically known that cohabitation leads to low marital satisfaction. In this study, we focused on not only cohabitation but also courtship duration as a courtship experience that improves quality of match, and examined the effects of these factors on marital satisfaction. Using data from the Japanese Life Course Panel Surveys (JLPS) for the Youth and the Middle-Aged, the analysis revealed that cohabitation had no effect on marital satisfaction. As for courtship duration, marital satisfaction was high when the duration was long, suggesting that courtship duration improves quality of match with the spouse. However, the satisfaction of men was high even when courtship duration was short, and it was indicated that there was a difference between men and women in the effect of quality of match on marital satisfaction.
