Description

To contribute to a sustainable society, product design must consider not only quality, cost and delivery time, but also environmental load. To accomplish this, products and their parts should be modular in design to consider future reuse, remanufacture, and upgrade possibilities. Conventional modular design methods generally focused on either reducing the developmental lead time or the financial cost of designing a competitive product family. However, considering resource efficiency not only in terms of future reuse but also during the production and procurement stages is essential for designers. Therefore, this paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation index from four perspectives, which includes quality, cost and lead time, as well as environmental impact, in order to enhance sustainability. This index is established in the context of supply chain management involving multiple product architecture candidates with diverse modularization granularity. The proposed index takes into account changes in component weight due to differences in product architecture and the associated changes in manufacturing lead time due to differences in assemblability, and changes in transportation routes, payroll levels and energy composition due to differences in suppliers. To enable the calculation of the index, this study also develops a design support system. The design system implementing the proposed method was applied to the design of a laptop and verified, whereby appropriate architecture candidates are successfully automatically derived from a supply chain perspective.
