Description

These days, people’s musical activities are becoming increasingly diversified and fluidized against the backdrop of the spread of the Internet and the globalization of consumer markets. As a result, sociology needs a new framework that is appropriate for dealing with the musical activities of people. In this paper, we will explore how to build such a framework based on the works of Antoine Hennion, a French sociologist who mainly engaged in music research. Hennion’s approach to sociology goes beyond the boundaries of research subjects. Indeed, he investigates various genres of music including rock, pop, classic, baroque, rap and techno. He also examines the production and consumption of music, paying close attention to the intermediary forms between them. Hennion’s work is known internationally in the fields of music sociology and culture. However, his name is not so well known in Japanese academic fields. Starting with a brief overview of the conflict between aestheticism and sociologism, which Hennion seeks to overcome, we then discuss “mediation”, a key concept of his thought, in detail. Moreover, we attempt to link Hennion’s work to the recent development of music studies in the related field of the sociology of music. Finally, we reconfirm that Hennion’s thought is important in order to better understand cultural activities, including the music of contemporary people.
