Abstract

The present study investigated the construct of teamwork among teachers at a special needs education school for children with intellectual disabilities. The original Teamwork Scale (TW Scale) was developed by the authors, after which the content was checked by 2 teachers at special needs schools. A preliminary survey was conducted with 10 teachers, and the content was double-checked by 5 teachers in order to validate the 25-item Teamwork Scale. After the content validation, a set of 24 survey questionnaires was mailed to the 185 special needs education schools for children with intellectual disabilities in Japan, that is, 4,440 questionnaires were mailed. Of these, 699 teachers returned the questionnaires; 646 were usable (valid return rate of 14.5%). The results of an exploratory categorical factor analysis using the oblimin rotation method followed by a series of item analyses derived 3 factors, consisting of 23 items (2 items were deleted from the original 25 items). The first factor was called “team teaching facilitator” (13 items, α=.93), the second factor, “team management” (7 items, α=.90), and the third factor “team learning” (3 items, α=.73). Future research should examine the construct of teamwork among special needs education teachers and methodological issues such as sampling procedures, stratified data analysis, double-barreled questionnaire items, and social desirability bias.
