Abstract

The sable (Martes zibellina), indigenous species in Hokkaido, and invasive alien species mink (Neovison vison) are distributed around the Kushiro wetland, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Effects of expansion of mink population on sables are uncertain, and thus, revealing the distribution of the sable and mink is important for conservation of the sable. In this study, we aimed to reveal their distribution and habitat use in and around the Kushiro wetland using fecal samples. We collected 99 feces from November 2019 to September 2020, and identified species using speciesspecific markers (sable = 24; mink = 12; fox = 36, unknow species = 27). We found that sable feces were more likely to be found in forest areas while mink feces were near or inside the wetland. Although the sample size was limited, the comparison of habitat use found a significant difference among the three habitat covariates (size of forest area, size of wetland area, and elevation). A further research is needed to reveal their detailed distribution and interspecific relationship.
