Abstract

This paper examines the experiences of tourists attending folk performing arts workshops through a case study of onidaiko and the Takachi Performing Arts Festival on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. Sado Island is one of Japan’s most famous places for experiencing traditional performing arts that are handed down from generation to generation. Since the enactment of the Festival Promotion Law in 1992, folk performing arts have been regarded as tourist attractions in Japan. There are many festivals that attract a significant number of tourists and other patrons. In recent years, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation, and Tourism has been promoting “new tourism,” which offers tourists a deeper cultural experience through participatory programs such as the folk performing arts workshops. There are many studies on the relationship between traditional performing arts and tourism. However, previous studies have regarded tourists only as spectators, not participants. In this study, we analyzed the experience of tourists participating in folk performing arts workshops by evaluating our observations from action research we conducted on Sado Island over a period of 10 years, starting in 2009. This study demonstrates that participation in the workshops helps tourists experience existential authenticity by promoting deeper interaction and communication with the host community. Folk performing arts workshops offer this authentic experience to tourists as something that is both temporarily and entertaining.
