Abstract

In this study, the movement of fishing boats with fishing lights has been investigated off Yamaguchi prefecture in the Sea of Japan from spring to fall using nighttime light satellite images by Suomi-NPP / VIIRS. Fishing boats were distributed in and around Umochinose and in the valley consisting of Okasenri and Hachirigase. They were affected by a part of the first branch of the Tsushima Warm Current because the current passes through the valley consisting of Okasenri and the Hachirigase from the south of Umochinose. Therefore, it is possible to estimate the fishery operation area, i.e., the fishing ground, off Yamaguchi prefecture in the Sea of Japan using the velocity field calculated by the ocean model.
