Abstract

Since April 1997, the inner part of Isahaya Bay has been isolated from the Ariake Sea by a dike for reclamation. We monitored water quality, grain-size of bottom sediments, and macrobenthos using the sediment samples collected from (1) 16 fixed stations inside of the dike on 15 June 2020 and (2) 106 fixed stations around the Ariake Sea from 13 to 17 June 2020. According to our results, in both inner and outer parts of Isahaya Bay, mean individual density of macrobenthos has been still smaller than the past. After the shut-off, macrobenthic animals rapidly decreased from 1998 to 2001, and then only few species increased from 2002 to 2003. However, from 2004 to 2020, most of them have disappeared or decreased rapidly in the both inner and outer parts of Isahaya Bay. The results of this research were used as the theoretical ground in order to require the investigation of opening the gate against the Japanese Government, and these will be possible to supply basic data before opening the gate for future studies after opening the gate of Isahaya Bay.
