Abstract

We present an extended thermodynamics theory which describes two essential dissipative processes in a rarefied polyatomic gas, that is, the processes with (i) molecular rotational and vibrational relaxation, and (ii) viscous and heat-conduction. The independent variables of the theory are the moment of a distribution function which obeys the Boltzmann equation. We introduce a simple collision term with three relaxation times, which is a generalization of the BGK model. The closed field equations are derived using the maximum entropy principle. As a typical application of the theory, we study linear wave propagation phenomena in a gas.
