Abstract

We have been developing a new miniature magnetic fluid shaft seal for a catheter-mounted miniature axial flow blood pump. Mechanical energy loss in the miniature axial flow blood pump using a power less miniature motor is critical issue, then we measured energy loss in the ferromagnetic fluid shaft seal. The ferromagnetic fluid shaft seal was installed in the miniature axial flow blood pump, and its energy loss was measured from input current of the motor. The energy loss of the ferromagnetic fluid shaft seal was 0.286W, and the breakdown of it was as loss due to magnetic force between the magnet and the iron ring 0.026W, friction loss due to viscosity of magnetic fluid 0.259W. In conclusion, energy loss of the magnetic fluid shaft seal is acceptable, but we are going to study further reduction of energy loss in the magnetic fluid shaft seal.
