Abstract

In this study, we focused on the fragrant substances derived from Abies sachalinensis and examined the effects of these substances on the sleep of the elderly. The study subjects were 11 older people who had difficulty falling asleep. After entering the laboratory, the subjects were fitted with electroencephalographs and other equipment and allowed to sleep from 24:00 to 7:00.

The OSA sleep questionnaire results showed that the scores of falling asleep and maintaining sleep, and recovering from fatigue tended to be higher in using pillowcases with fragrance substances and essential oils. Also, the latency to fall asleep and the time to wake up during sleep was decreased in the conditions for using pillowcases with fragrance substances and essential oils compared to the control condition. These results suggest that fragrant substances derived from Abies sachalinensis may contribute to the induction of falling asleep and the reduction of mid-sleep awakening time.
