<p>　There are an increasing number of smartphone applications that provide menus to support planning a meal. For dietitians and students attending a dietetic training course at school, these applications represent a source of information for creating appropriate menus. This study aimed to assess the functions of these applications in Japan.</p><p>　In February 2021, applications were selected from two of the largest and most popular mobile operating systems’ online stores ― Google Play Store for Android, and Apple store for iOS ― by searching for two keywords: "Kondate” and "Recipe.” A total of 32 applications were selected and listed to explore their features. There were various functions for search menus; the most common application features were inputting arbitrary terms and selecting an optional food name. Explanations for how to cook meals were provided in text format, and a video distribution was also offered in some applications. Menus were created and provided by experts, but they could also be posted by the application users. In addition, some applications had a function allowing users to automatically create and share menus based on their registered information and preferences. In the future, it is recommended that an assessment for smartphone applications be conducted through their revision, changing the functionalities and new development.</p>
