Many factors influence the decision-making of interpreters in their selection of interpreting strategies, but “risk” has been pointed out by some researchers recently as having greater influence than previously understood. According to Pym (2015), problems that interpreters encounter during their performances vary in terms of levels of risk, which they manage by employing higher effort for high-risk problems and lower effort for low-risk problems. To investigate the possibility of such a correlation, the current research examines a televised press conference by a Japanese politician on a controversial issue that was interpreted into English. Interpreters in such situations face high risks not only because of the sensitive nature of the topics concerned, but also because their renderings are likely to be scrutinized by a large audience. Examples of “lengthening” by an interpreter are analyzed to explore the relationship between the level of effort exerted and the risks involved.
