Abstract

<p>This paper analyzes the logic and structure of liberal democracy from the perspective of the welfare state theory. The welfare state is defined as the political system that achieves economic growth and provides citizens with social protection through public policies. Therefore, the reconstruction of the theory of the welfare state has implications on the condition and mechanism of liberal democracy. First, I examined the structural conditions of the golden age of the welfare state, that is, the Keynesian welfare state, and analyzed its legitimacy by focusing on the precondition, input, and output of the political system. Second, I explored the structural conditions of the silver age of the welfare state, that is, the Competitive welfare state, and analyzed its mechanism. Finally, I considered the theoretical implications of my analyses and the future of liberal democracy. This paper shows that liberal democracy is not sufficiently liberal, social, or democratic during any times. Therefore, we should clarify its merits and demerits, and improve them incrementally..</p>
